Canoe The Nonquon

As Canoe the Nonquon organizers prepare to celebrate a major milestone next month, as plans are underway for new activities leading up to the June 7th event.

To mark the 40th anniversary of this popular, two exciting new events will be staged to bring awareness to the race and the local museum.

For starters, this Saturday (May 10) beginning at 5 p.m. a film festival will be staged at Town Hall 1873. A total of six documentaries featuring canoes will be shown, including the premiere presentation of “Nonquon Island”, a film about the history of Seven Mile Island.

Following are the films to be shown:
• 5:00 p.m. Oil + Water (60 min.)
• 6:10 p.m. Ten Canoes (92 min.)
• 7:45 p.m. The Legend of the Flying Canoe (11 min.)
• 8:00 p.m. Festival Premiere -- Nonquon Island (30 min.)
• 9:15 p.m. In the Land of War Canoes (43 min.)
• 10:10 p.m. River of Life (53 min.)

A brief reception will be held in the lower-level at Town Hall 1873 following the showing of Nonquon Island.

This event gets underway at 5 p.m. with an admission of $10 for adults and $7 for seniors and students. All tickets sold at the door.

The following week, on Friday, May 16, Scugog Shores Museum and Canoe the Nonquon will host a day of children’s movies and activities at the Scugog Community Centre, 1655 Reach St, Port Perry.

This event is for children ages 5 to 12 and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a fee of $25 per child. All proceeds from the two events will go to assisting with the operations at the Scugog Shores Museum.

On Saturday, June 7, the 40th running of Canoe the Nonquon, a 26-kilometre paddle down the Nonquon River and across Lake Scugog ending at the lakefront in Port Perry will take place.

This year, participants who collect more than $500 in pledges will have their name entered in a draw for a 15.5’ Coleman canoe valued at $600, donated by Reid’s Independent Grocers and Canadian Tire.

Registration will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday, June 6 and again on race day, beginning at 6 a.m. There is an entry fee of $40 per canoe or kayak.
