Local communications company is
honoured by being named
Scugog’s “Business Of The Year”
It’s always exciting to hear when a local company makes it big. And Compton Communications, winner of the Chamber of Commerce “Business of the Year Award,” is no exception.
After nearly 40 years of business success and utter devotion to the community, Compton has become a renowned name in the Scugog area.

RON AND NANCY COMPTON
A family owned company that started out in 1972; Compton has grown to become the primary internet and cable service provider for the Port Perry and Uxbridge area. And with good reason! Not only is Compton regarded as a highly-esteemed contributor to the community, but it is also one of the country’s leading innovators in launching new services.
Presently, Compton is working on the debut of a new fibre optics system, otherwise known as “fibre to the home” (FTTH), with its primary supplier, Motorola. This new service is directed at residential subscribers.
However, new and ground-breaking for Port Perry, the system will also supply media opportunities to businesses and corporations, intriguing them to set up in town.
This is a step which owner Ron Compton sees as a positive progression for Port Perry. As he explains, he feels this new medium puts Port Perry in a “good negotiation position.”
“The new service is a major step forward in technology for Canada and our company is the first in the country to deploy it,” says Ron.
“Fibre optics is the best medium to move more data because fibre allows the signals to go directly into the home without the existence of “actives” between the main source and the home.”
As a result of this improved system, Compton Communications has the opportunity to expand its market range. Now, not only will the company deliver services to residential areas, but it will be able to provide advanced commercial services to larger businesses.
Ron has witnessed his company grow and expand over the years. What began as a father and son joint venture, eventually transformed into a full-fledged, successful solely owned company - an accomplishment that would make anyone more than proud!
And pride is a feeling Ron has come to know well. His company, despite its smaller size (approximately 5000 subscribers), has been able to offer HD and digital television for far longer than its same-size competitors; proving its strength among a field of much larger contenders.
Compton was also one of the first multi-service operators to launch Subscription Video OnDemand and in 2003 it was the first company in Canada to launch an HDTV-capable personal video recorder (PVR).
What seems to prove over and over again is that the company is dedicated to jumping on the innovative band wagon.
But, above all else, Ron is most proud of the personal committment of his company. He has never lost sight of his roots or of his dedication to his community.
Ron has been a member on board of the Port Perry Hospital Foundation for many years now and continues to offer support so the facility can carry on its expertise and, hopefully, expand.
He is also first to acknowledge the specialized services that the hospital provides to the community and he understands that the hospital is a primary provider to a wide range of patients from all over the region. As he sees it, this only further confirms the hospital as an integral asset to the community and, therefore, it should receive the utmost in support.
It’s also not uncommon to see Ron around the new Scugog arena. He was a part of the arena’s building committee and played a significant role in developing the arena into the extraordinary facility it is today. As many insist, his devotion to the community is undeniable!
And Ron carries the same dedication into his customer care. As a member of the community himself, he feels his business has a special loyalty to local residents and, because of this allegiance, Compton is always trying to serve its customers better.
All of his staff members are highly trained to answer all of their customers’ questions. And, unlike many other cable and satellite companies, all calls are handled by human beings – meaning no frustrating two hour phone conferences. There is also always enough staff on the job to handle incoming calls; therefore, a customer’s wait time, if any at all, is greatly decreased.
As Ron explains, his business philosophy is to treat all customers as if they are the only customer Compton has. The company ensures this philosophy is followed by caring for each customer according to their individual requirements.
They provide a 24/7 telephone technical support with local technicians on call between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. on weeknights and 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and holidays. This consistent service ensures that any problem a customer may have is dealt with in an immediate and efficient fashion.
With such an obligation to serving the community and with plenty of years of business success, Compton was a more than deserving recipient of the “Business of the Year Award” (for a company with over 15 employees).
